Celebrating 60 Years of Meals on Wheels - A Picnic to Remember: Annual Gathering United Clients and Volunteers
April 3rd, 2025

As the last traces of snow melt away, the days grow longer, and temperatures slowly begin to rise, thoughts naturally turn to the promise of spring. For many Meals on Wheels clients in the late 1960s and 1970s, this change in seasons also meant looking forward to a special tradition: the annual Meals on Wheels picnic.

Originally held at the Old Norwood Road home of Mr. And Mrs. John Bowes, the picnic was a much-anticipated event, bringing together clients and volunteers for an afternoon of fresh air, good food, and warm company. Clients who were well enough to attend were picked up and driven to the picnic by dedicated volunteers, ensuring that no one missed out on the opportunity to connect and celebrate.

One of the highlights of the gathering was the singalong, often led by Mrs. Q. M. Gray, a Meals on Wheels volunteer who played the piano. Mrs. Gray’s connection to the program was deeply personal—she had once received meals herself during a severe illness. Her gratitude turned into service, and through her music, she brought joy to others who had also relied on the support of Meals on Wheels.

For those who spent much of their time at home, the picnic was more than just an outing—it was a moment of joy, a reminder that they were part of a caring community. Laughter and music filled the air as clients and volunteers shared stories, sang familiar tunes, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of being together.

Though the tradition of the annual picnic has faded, its spirit lives on in the Meals on Wheels program today. Each delivered meal is more than just nourishment—it is a connection, a moment of kindness, and a reminder that no one in our community is forgotten.
