In 1999, Heather and Mark Roper arrived in Peterborough, eager to become part of a community close to Mark’s heart. For Mark, it was a homecoming to a town rich with family memories, while Heather sought the warmth and connection of a new community.
Their journey began with a simple visit to Meals on Wheels, then located at Activity Haven. Welcomed by the indomitable Bernice Clark, Heather and Mark were quickly immersed in the world of volunteerism. There were no formalities—just a sense of trust and responsibility that Bernice instilled in every new recruit.
Mark recalls, “Bernice was a role model of efficiency. Constantly busy, constantly moving, she was the nerve centre of a small but tightly organized operation. She was the boss and a delight to work for.” Under her guidance, Heather and Mark found themselves part of a dedicated team, delivering not just meals but moments of connection to those in need.
Heather and Mark’s commitment to the cause did not go unnoticed. Mark was soon invited to join the Board of Directors, and later took on the role of President. His leadership, marked by compassion and dedication, played a crucial part in guiding Meals on Wheels through the significant transition of amalgamating with Community Care Peterborough.
Their shared passion for service didn’t just build an efficient organization; it built relationships. “For a few brief moments, it also connects the recipient with the outside world. Some moments are longer than others, but these moments are important,” reflects Mark.
Heather and Mark are still actively volunteering on a weekly basis, delivering meals and making connections. Their journey with Meals on Wheels is a testament to the power of love and leadership. Their story is not just about delivering meals; it’s about delivering hope, connection, and community.
