Over 60 years, Meals on Wheels in Peterborough has continually adapted, ensuring clients receive the best possible service. Behind every delivered meal is a network of dedicated providers who have shaped the program, responding to growing needs, shifting circumstances, and client feedback.
In the early years, two local hospitals—Civic Hospital (now PRHC) and St. Joseph’s—were the foundation of the program. Their kitchens prepared nutritious meals at an affordable cost, allowing Meals on Wheels to take root and expand. As demand increased, so did the need for additional providers. By the 1980s, new vendors were brought in, enabling hot meal deliveries five days a week for the first time—an essential milestone in ensuring reliable support for seniors and adults living with disabilities.
By the 1990s, a community connection with Trent University led to a new partnership. Trent’s food provider, Marriott, took on meal preparation, ensuring both quality and sustainability. However, when Trent’s contract with Marriott ended, Meals on Wheels had to pivot—demonstrating its resilience by securing new providers without disrupting service. These shifts were not just about logistics; they reflected a deep commitment to keeping meals both accessible and enjoyable for clients.
Today, that same adaptability continues with Maple Ridge Retirement Services, the current meal provider for Peterborough and Lakefield. Their responsiveness to client feedback has ensured meals remain nutritious and appealing. More than just a vendor, Maple Ridge has also supported Meals on Wheels fundraising efforts, reinforcing a community-driven approach.
Through every transition, one thing has remained unchanged: a commitment to delivering more than just meals—delivering care, dignity, and a sense of connection to those who need it most.
